Strong partnership with Tietokeskus accelerates Enersense IT environment modernisation

Enersense, a provider of zero-emission energy solutions, is growing rapidly. Serving the industrial, energy, telecommunications, and construction sectors, the pioneering company is investing heavily in business digitalisation and modernising its IT infrastructure.

Following recent acquisitions, the company’s IT environment had become fragmented, with multiple vendors involved. Now, the aim is to consolidate the growth and integrate the acquired companies into the Enersense IT environment. Tietokeskus supports this process, assisting with cloud migration and modernisation, while also acting as a link between the various vendors.

“Technical debt is enormous. It challenges both people’s daily work and system functionality,” explains IT Service Manager Markus Murto.

The partnership between Enersense and Tietokeskus also covers service desk support, workstation management, and core IT licences. The collaboration is continuously refined based on feedback.

Migrating server infrastructure to the cloud saves time and money

Modernising the IT systems of a large international company is no small feat. The goal is to serve both the business and end users, ensuring projects are completed and issues resolved without causing user problems. Still, the change process is inevitably demanding for the entire organisation, Murto notes.

“With 20 subsidiaries, each with its own systems and ways of working, integrating them isn’t exactly an easy deal.”

The project began with an audit of the old environment and a specification of new requirements, as needs had changed significantly over the system’s ten-year lifecycle. Some services were retired altogether.

“Previously, everything was done in-house, and for example, we had 500 servers. Now we’re phasing them out and moving operations to the cloud,” Murto explains.

Modernising the server infrastructure is projected to save hundreds of thousands of euros annually. Maintenance alone will reduce hundreds of work hours per year.

“Our vision is to be fully cloud-based. It significantly simplifies system management.”

Efficient online store makes life easier for everyone

Device procurement has been digitalised and deployed across the organisation. End users now order their devices pre-configured from the Tietokeskus online store, with no manager approval required. This saves considerable time, as ready-to-use devices are delivered directly to employees.

“The service device and online store processes adapt to the client’s needs. The one-stop approach works really well.”

Previously, device purchases were handled by category from multiple vendors: laptops from one, printers from another, phones and networking devices from a third. Now, all procurement is centralised through Tietokeskus’s online store. An English-language store serves the Baltic countries.

User management is smooth thanks to Azure AD integration, allowing centralised control of user rights. End users also benefit from single sign-on for the online store.

“We wanted a better process and a unified procurement channel. It’s easier for the end user, too. In a group like ours, procurement cannot go through IT; otherwise, all we’d be doing is clicking around in shopping carts,” Murto explains.

In addition to Azure AD, Enersense required the partner to integrate with its own procurement system.

“That was one of the easiest parts of building the service concept. The requirement was that the partner could integrate with our procurement system and deliver everything that uses electricity. Ensuring the logistics chain works and goods are delivered quickly was also crucial,” Murto says.

“The Tietokeskus online store team has great people who listen and proactively make suggestions. Tietokeskus adapts skilfully to the customer’s needs.”
