Procuring PCs as a service significantly reduces an organisation’s carbon footprint

A study commissioned by Tietokeskus compared different PC procurement models from a sustainability perspective. The research examined the greenhouse gas emissions generated over the lifecycle of a device when acquired through a traditional leasing model versus a service-based model (PCaaS, PC as a Service). The results have been critically reviewed by an independent third party.

The findings show that the PCaaS model can deliver substantial environmental benefits. In the PCaaS approach, the supplier provides the customer organisation with ready-to-use computers and related equipment as a monthly-priced service package. The model scales according to the customer’s needs and, unlike financial leasing, has no predefined contract term.

According to the study, leasing-based procurement produces 20.5% more emissions, which in a 100-person organisation over a 10-year period corresponds to a cumulative reduction of 13.5 t CO₂eq in favour of the PCaaS model. This is equivalent to approximately 1,000,000 kilometres driven by a passenger car (source: openco2.net). The carbon footprint calculation was carried out in accordance with the EN ISO 14067:2018 standard and critically reviewed in line with EN ISO 14071:2024.

The PCaaS model’s significantly lower carbon footprint compared to leasing is primarily the result of lifecycle optimisation and more efficient redeployment of devices between users. When devices are leased via a financing company, they are more likely to end up in storage unused – for example due to staff turnover.

“Organisations can have a major impact on reducing environmental burdens through their own actions. Considering, assessing and analysing environmental impacts is an essential part of Tietokeskus’ business. We continuously develop our operations and actively seek to reduce environmental impacts across all areas of our business,” says Janne Lipiäinen, CEO of Tietokeskus Finland Oy.
